I sell my own handmade jewelry and select antique never-worn adornments. I use vintage and recycled materials as much as possible because I adore the Earth. But also because I believe the best jewelry is passed on and full of story. My pieces are one of a kind or a few in a series.
The name Salaamat comes from the Tagalog word "salamat" meaning "thanks" which has it's roots in the Arabic word for peace, pronounced"salaam." I wanted to emphasize this relationship between the Arabic language and Filipino culture, because within it lies a story of what my ancestors were before the arrival of European colonization, and what our post-colony is and can be.
The historical link between these words also illustrates my belief that walking with a sense of gratitude towards the others and the Earth is what enables one to feel truly at peace.
I make jewelry to honor the hard-working people I have met from throughout Southeast Asia, Central America, North Africa, the Middle East and beyond who have always brought an elegance and grace to the most menial of jobs.
Salaamat Jewelry is handmade on Ohlone Land/San Francisco, California. But my ingredients come from caravans all over the world.
Just a little shine to help you reflect the sunlight that beams down upon you.
Salaamat,
Kristia
